State fire marshal investigates suspicious Ripley Co. fire

DONIPHAN, MO (KFVS) - By Holly Brantley

DONIPHAN, MO (KFVS) - The state fire marshal is investigating a suspicious fire in Riley County that left a family homeless. Fire Chief Fred Aldridge says the fire happened Monday east of Doniphan at the Donnell family home off of Route 142.

They do not know the cause of the fire but do consider it suspicious.

No one was hurt, but the family lost everything. "We have nothing left," said Sherrie Donnell. Donnell shared the home with her daughter, granddaughter, and six year old son.

This is the latest test for the family who is no stranger to tragedy. Donnell's daughter Heather was murdered in 2007. Her alleged killer, Eddie Marshall will be tried in two weeks.

"With the murder trail on my mind, I haven't been able to think about anything else," said Donnell.

Family and friends are reaching out to the family.

"I'm just trying to be there for her," said Anna Stidham, Donnell's best friend. "They need everything. Besides this, Heather's son Gavin is fighting cancer. It's a lot to take."

The Red Cross helped Donnell get a hotel room for a few days.

"As of tomorrow morning that runs out," said Donnell. "I don't know what we're going to do."

Donations can be made in the name of Sherrie Donnell at Southern Missouri Bank in Doniphan.

Investigators hope to make an arrest soon.
