Murdered MTSU basketball player may have tweeted before death

MURFREESBORO, TN (WMC-TV) - Hundreds gathered Thursday night on the MTSU basketball court on which 21-year-old Tina Stewart was considered a rising star.

Her boyfriend, KC Anuna, was among those remembering her during the vigil.

"Tina," said Anuna.  "Everybody said she lightened up everybody's day," he added.

Murfreesboro Police said Stewart was stabbed to death by her 18-year-old roommate and fellow Memphis native Shanterrica Madden.

Stewart reportedly posted a message about Madden on her Twitter account hours before her death.

"I just called the police on my roommate," she wrote.  "I feel like a snitch, but I don't like that (expletive)."

Police told our sister station in Nashville they are looking into the Twitter post and whether illegal drugs were being used in the apartment where Stewart died, but not by her.

Meanwhile, Shanterrica Madden's defense attorney told reporters after her initial court appearance that his client acted in self-defense during a knife fight with Stewart..

"It's sad all the way around," said attorney Joe Brandon.  "Both of these girls have been put in a bad situation.  I mean, it's a tragedy."

Despite her defense, police said Madden never called 911 after Stewart was stabbed.

Madden is being held without bond.
