Sarah Palin talks to tea partiers near Kansas City

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) - Conservative icon and self-described "hockey mom" Sarah Palin rallied thousands of Missouri tea party activists Saturday night at a minor-league hockey arena outside Kansas City.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate praised what she called the "people's movement" at a daylong rally featuring local and national political figures.

She invoked familiar themes at the Independence Events Center, from praising military veterans to mocking President Barack Obama's health care overhaul and other "hopey changey stuff."

Former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson and former Congressman J.C. Watts also spoke at the "Winning America Back" rally sponsored by a nonprofit citizens group called Preserving American Liberty.
