Bennett Elementary to close in Cairo
By Heartland News
CAIRO, IL (KFVS) - The Bennett Elementary School Board in Cairo voted to close the school.
The board made that decision Wednesday night.
That means 12 teachers, nine teacher's aids, two secretaries, two custodians, and one administrator are all out of a job.
Superintendent Leotis Swopes says closing the school is the only way to balance the district's budget.
Swopes says the district's losing more than $100,000 a year and about 22 students a year leave the district each year.
The 145 students from Bennett Elementary will move to Emerson Elementary School next fall.
