Jackson, Mo. woman dies after crash at Freedom Corner in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - A woman died after a crash at Freedom Corner on Thursday afternoon, May 25.

According to Cape Girardeau police, officers responded to the intersection of Broadway and West End around 3:20 p.m.

They say the initial investigation showed that a 2020 Buick Envision driven by 81-year-old Janice Unger, of Jackson, was going westbound on Broadway at West End as a 2016 Dodge Journey driven by 29-year-old Raven Thomas, of Cape Girardeau, was going northbound on West End approaching Broadway.

Police say Thomas proceeded through the intersection with a green light as Unger started through the intersection with a red light. The Buick hit the back passenger side of the Dodge Journey as it went through the intersection.

The Buick then continued and hit a retaining wall on the northwest side of the intersection.

Unger was taken to an area hospital and later died from her injuries.
