CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Crews were called to an early morning fire in Cape Girardeau on Sunday, October 17.

Initially, firefighters were called at 4:42 a.m. to a garage fire at 50 Centennial Drive.

When they arrived, crews found 95 percent of the home on fire.

According to Cape Girardeau Fire Chief Randy Morris, flames were coming form the home, which is also on the city’s condemnation list.

Mutual aid and off duty firefighters were called in to help battle the blaze and to protect neighboring property.

The fire was then quickly contained, in approximately 20 minutes.

One individual was treated and transported after receiving injuries from breaking a window.

Chief Morris said two people had been were in the structure.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but Chief Morris said it is considered suspicious because of where it started, which was in the garage.

The home was also without utilities.

The home has extensive fire and smoke damage, at an estimated $125,000 loss.

Morris also reports this is the second time the home has caught fire.

The home burned on December 5, 2020.
