A witness told officers that a Honda CR-V was in the right lane and trying to pass stopped traffic when the driver lost control.

According to the preliminary police report, a tractor-trailer, driven by 65-year-old Herman Woodley, hit the CR-V in the passenger side and shoved the SUV into the back of a tractor-trailer driven by 32-year-old Kote Chkheidze, which was stopped in traffic.

The driver of the CR-V was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Woodley was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Police said Chkheidze and his passenger told them they were not injured and did not require medical treatment.

Woodley told police he stopped at a hill and saw the vehicles, but could not stop in time to avoid the crash.

The westbound lanes of I-24 were closed for more than three hours.

The Paducah Police Department’s collision reconstruction team is investigating.
