CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - A ribbon-cutting ceremony kicked off the opening of the new Southeast Behavioral Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
The ceremony was held Tuesday morning, February 23.
Missouri Governor Mike Parson participated in the event.
He called the hospital a perfect model and a good way to expand the needed care for behavioral health.
”This mental health issue doesn’t pick boundary lines whatsoever. It’s all across the state,” Governor Parson said.
“We know this is an issue whether you’re in southeast Missouri, whether you’re in downtown St. Louis or the big urban areas.”
SoutheastHEALTH’s President and CEO Ken Bateman said this will be one of the few facilities that offer services to adolescents on an in-patient basis.
“To have 20 to 25 dedicated beds, that’s going to be a huge lift to this community,” Bateman said.
Sixty beds are dedicated to adults and 22 for seniors, according to the CEO of the behavioral hospital, Tim Cockrell. The opening process will move in phases.
“We’ll be opening just a few beds at a time till we open up an entire unit and then we’ll slowly grow as we go,” Cockrell said.
Bateman said this facility will be convenient for southeast Missouri families because they won’t have to travel to places like Memphis or St. Louis for services.
“I’m excited to come back here in a couple of years when this thing is totally full and operational and see what we’re really doing in people’s lives because at the end of the day that’s what’s important,” Governor Parson said.
SoutheastHEALTH partnered with Universal Health Services to provide a new hospital that will be available for walk-ins and referrals.
The facility will offer inpatient and outpatient services for a wide range of mental, emotional and behavioral health services for teens, adults and seniors.
Located on South Silver Springs Road, will employ nearly 200 health professionals.
The $33 million state-of-the-art facility spans more than 68,000 square feet and has 102 beds.
Construction of the facility began in 2019.
Workers said the hospital should open in March.
