CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Public Works officials have opened the Broadway flood gate in Cape Girardeau just before 9:30 a.m.
Both, the Broadway and Themis gates were closed in Cape Girardeau due to the rising Mississippi River.
Public Works officials anticipate that the Themis gate will be open on Tuesday, Jan. 21
They said after the Themis gate is back open they will coordinate with Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation officials to clean any debris left over.
They are urging people to use caution when walking near the river.
According to Stan Polivick, assistant public works directors in Cape Girardeau, the Themis gate was closed on Sunday, January 12 and the Broadway gate was closed on Monday afternoon, January 13. They expected the gates to be closed for about a week.
Polivick said crews are keeping an eye on the pumping stations and major street crossing for debris from this past weekend. He said they don’t expect to have to close the railroad gates.
