Man facing attempted murder charge after shooting of Illinois State Police trooper

WHEELING, Ill. (KFVS) - A trooper with the Illinois State Police was shot while serving a warrant in Cook County, Illinois.

According to state police it happened at a home in Wheeling, Ill. around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 15.

Volodymyr Dragan, 43, of Wheeling was charged with attempted murder of an ISP Trooper. Dragan is currently in custody pending a bond hearing at the First District Cook County Courthouse on August 17, 2019

The trooper has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering.

Gunshots were fired from within the residence and a 32-year-old ISP trooper was shot and taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect is in custody and being detained pending formal charges.

The warrant was wanted for forcible detention, aggravated assault to a police officer and aggravated unlawful restraint stemming from an ISP traffic stop which occurred on I-294 at approximately 1:30 a.m. on August 15.

“The men and women of the Illinois State Police again and again display bravery simply by doing the job they’ve sworn to do. This officer, and all first responders who responded today, showed uncommon valor in what is becoming an all too common situation. The officer and his family will be in our hearts during his recovery,” stated ISP Acting Director Brendan F. Kelly.

The investigation continues.
