POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KFVS) - The Butler County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a deadly shooting.
A man taken into custody after his girlfriend’s death is out of jail.
According to Sheriff Mark Dobbs, authorities released Michael Choate, 46, of Poplar Bluff on Thursday evening on Aug. 8, pending further investigation.
He was accused of shooting his girlfriend, identified as 37-year-old Katrina Suiter.
Dobbs says Choate was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Choate is still considered a suspect.
On Thursday night, Dobbs told Heartland News, he’s still awaiting lab results before formal charges can be made.
Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs said it happened in a camper trailer on County Road 476.
Dobbs said they got the call around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7 from a man saying his girlfriend shot herself.
Choate told authorities she was waving a gun around and shot herself.
He said a deputy responding noticed things didn’t add up and “the story didn’t make sense.”
Sheriff Dobbs said they are confident she didn’t shoot herself after seeing the position of her body and angles of the scene.
“Just the fact that someone would accidentally shoot themselves in the face is somewhat bizarre. So, with that you’re gonna have to have a pretty good account of the events as well as some facts, some physical findings to match up with that. And in this case, they’re just not there," said Sheriff Dobbs.
Deputies say the victim had bruises on her face and said Choate told them they had a history of domestic violence.
Sheriff Dobbs said no one else was home at the time, but the trailer was parked on someone else’s property. He said the property owner heard the gun shot.
According to the sheriff, Choate was arrested on July 30 on drug and gun charges and posted bond on July 31.
