1 dead, 2 injured after tree falls on boat on Current River

VAN BUREN, Mo. (KFVS) - One person has died and two other people injured after a tree fell on a boat in the Current River north of Van Buren, Missouri.

It happened on Friday, June 21 around 3:30 p.m. 10 miles north of Van Buren.

According to Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder, there were three people in the boat.

It happened at Waymeyer Shute National Park Service River access, according to EMA.

Coroner Erik McSpadden said the man who was killed was from Van Buren, and was well liked.

According to a preliminary report from the Highway Patrol, Levi Mayberry, 22, was the driver of the boat. He was killed when traveling downstream a tree fell hitting the boat. Mayberry died at 5:20 p.m. The next of kin was notified.

A 26-year-old woman from Eminence and a 25-year-old man from Van Buren were the others in the boat. They received moderate injuries and were taken by EMS to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

Sgt. Kinder said it can’t be confirmed right now that the death was due to the storm coming through the area.

The National Park Service is investigating.
