Teenager hit and killed by train

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS) - The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the death of a juvenile in the Hematite, Mo. area on Sunday afternoon, May 19.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the juvenile was hit while walking across a railway bridge in the 4700 block of Highway P in Hematite around 12:41 p.m.

CBS-affiliate KMOV reports the 15-year-old girl was identified as Shianne N. Haines, of Hillsboro.

Deputies say five minors were swimming in Joachim Creek near a train trestle.

According to witness statements, the group then made their way to the trestle. While preparing to jump, a train approached.

Deputies say three of the people on the trestle jumped off to safety. Two others, including a 15-year-old girl from Hillsboro, tried to run down the trestle.

They say one of the individuals made it to safety. However, the 15-year-old girl did not. She was hit by the train and pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

The other four minors were not injured.

The Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation. The Union Pacific Railway is also conducting their own investigation into the incident.

Deputies urge people to not play around or hang out by train tracks. If caught, they say you could be charged with a crime; and at worst, you could lose your life.
