CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -As the Blue Angels prepare to take off in Cape Girardeau, Trent Essner, an audiology doctor at Sound Advice, is reminding folks to protect their ears because the damage we do to our ears today can impact us in the future.
“We really need to protect our ears and make sure we are doing all we can to keep them in good shape as we age,” said Essner.
He said loud noises can cause serious damage so he recommends using protection like ear muffs or ear plugs.
He said even cheap ear plugs will do the trick.
"The big key to that one is to roll them up small in your hand and put them down deep in their ear. I found that if you pull the ear back it opens the ear canal and gives you a little deeper and better protection,” said Essner.
When looking for ear protection, Essner explained you want to check the noise reduction rating.
He said the higher that number is, the better your ears are protected.
“When we protect the ears by putting the earmuffs over the ears or the plugs inside the ear canal we are reducing the amount of sound getting into the inner ear to protect the structure,” said Essner.
He reminded parents that children need to be taught the importance of ear protection and that either option will work but ear muffs might be more comfortable.
