Coach Shumate took Southeast to two Division II National Championship games back in the heyday of SEMO hoops.

Here are some of coach Shumate’s more interesting quotes from the interview.

He talked about winning at southeast Missouri.

Coach Shumate talked about President Ronald Reagan asking for a SEMO basketball jacket during a stop in Cape Girardeau.

“Evidently, the President heard about our program and wanted a basketball jacket. So we raced and got him one. So we were thrilled about having that," he said.

Coach Shumate offered advice for the SEMO Basketball program.

“Consistency is what I would suggest, I would be speaking at every club in town, I would go into dorms, I would find where the players were, that’s the biggest thing," he said.
