Nursing students pilot new program at Southeast

Southeast helps create new online nursing courses

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University helps create a new learning experience for nursing students.

The school partnered with Mid-America transplant in St. Louis to create an online course about organ and tissue donation.

It’s called “Organ and Tissue Donor Education for Undergraduate Nursing Students.”

Some senior nursing students just finished a pilot program of the courses where they learned how to recognize signs of brain death and how to speak with grieving families.

Dr. Linda Heitman says there's a lack of education for nursing students.

“Together, we explored disparities in organ and tissue donation education for nursing students, and we created a learning platform to provide current, comprehensive information to address those disparities,” Heitman said.

Southeast President Carlos Vargas also visited Mid-America Transplant along with his wife Pam.

“I was very impressed with the site and interested in developing a relationship with Mid-America Transplant,” Vargas said.

The online courses will be offered at southeast and other schools next semester.
