BENTON, IL (KFVS) - Traffic is back to normal after being down to one lane after a semi truck crash in Franklin County, Illinois on Wednesday, April 17.

It happened around 1:45 p.m.

A preliminary investigation by state police shows the semi pulling a trailer was traveling in the passing lane on I-57 northbound at milepost 79.

A vehicle traveling northbound in front of the semi slowed abruptly and the driver of that vehicle made an illegal u-turn in the median turn around.

The semi’s driver veered to the left to avoid striking traffic that had reduced speed due to the vehicle making the illegal u-turn.

The truck left the roadway to the west, entered the center median, and overturned.

The driver 66-year-old Donald Ray Beechum of McMinnville, Tennessee was not injured.

Northbound drivers had been asked to use caution and expect delays if traveling northbound on I-57 in Franklin county.

The crash happened at the 79.5 mile marker according to Emergency Management. State Police were at the scene.

The semi truck rolled onto the median. The trailer split in half and they were having to remove it.

The northbound ramp at the Benton Exit at mile marker 71 was closed to reduce the amount of traffic entering the interstate.
