BENTON, IL (KFVS) - A manufacturing facility in southern Illinois will now be owned and operated by a local family.
The Mincon Group of Ireland acquired the former Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc. facility in Benton’s Industrial Park.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, April 16 at the facility.
Congressman Mike Bost, Senator Dale Fowler, Representative David Severin and Benton Mayor Fred Kondritz were at the announcement on Tuesday morning, along with the new owners, area officials and organizations.
The 400,000 square-foot facility sits on 38 acres and will be managed by Mike and Shirley Jones, who also manage the current Mincon manufacturing facility in the Industrial Park.
According to Mike Jones, they plan to use part of the BRP facility for making new Mincon products in addition to the drill bits and hammers that they make at their current operation. The rest of the facility will be made available for lease to manufacturers, businesses and for storage and distribution.
“North America, United States in particular is one of the largest markets for our product," Jones said. "So it makes sense for most of it to be manufactured here.”
Franklin County Regional Economic Development Executive Director Rick Linton says this is just the “tipping point”.
""We lost 340 jobs here, so this is going to be fantastic and we can start to build those jobs back," Linton said.
Mincon specializes in the design, manufacture and servicing of hard-rock drilling consumables. Along with drill bits and hammers, Mincon also offers a full range of drill string consumables for things like mining, exploration, water well, geothermal, construction, horizontal directional drilling, oil-gas and energy.
“My hope is to see good jobs brought here and if we could be a benefit help to that, that would be my dream. to see Mincon grow and possibly," said Jones.
