Stolen purse lands Carbondale, IL man in prison for more than 3 years

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A Carbondale, Illinois man pleaded guilty to a 2017 crime on Thursday, April 11.

According to the Jackson County State’s Attorney, James A. McLafferty, 40 of Carbondale, Illinois pleaded guilty to the charge for burglary, a class 2 felony. He was sentenced to serve 42 months (three and a half years) in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by a two year period of mandatory supervised release.

The State’s Attorney said on August 29, 2017, McLafferty entered a motor vehicle parked outside a business in Murphysboro, Illinois without authority to do so.

He removed a purse of the vehicle owner who was inside the business.

The State’s Attorney said video surveillance at the business captured the incident, and James McLafferty was identified as the person who removed the purse from the vehicle.

McLafferty pleaded guilty to the charge of burglary at that time and was sentenced to a term of 364 days in jail and placed on probation for 36 months. Officials said he failed to comply with the conditions of his probation sentence and his probation was revoked.

McLafferty he was re-sentenced to the prison term.

The investigation was conducted by the Murphysboro Police Department. Assistant State’s Attorneys Rebecca Blomer and Luke Palmer were responsible for the prosecution of this case.
