ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - Police blocked off a “major crime scene” in a residential area of Elizabethtown following an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday night, Kentucky State Police confirmed.
The Elizabethtown Police Department shared a picture of that crime scene around 6:30 p.m. on West Poplar Street between Mantle Avenue and Morningside Drive.
EPD was involved in a police pursuit with a suspect that started in Elizabethtown, KSP Trooper Peter Binkley said. He would not say why the chase started or the exact location of where it started.
A local store owner, Glenn Deaton, said he heard a few gunshots, and the rest happened really quickly.
“A little small silver car about 100 yards away up the street here started pulling out and the police officers went into high pursuit and did some yelling and at that time five or six gunshots went off,” Deaton said.
The high speed chase led officers into LaRue County, Binkley said.
Outside Sonora, on Hwy 84, the chase ended.
What happened at the end of the pursuit is not clear, Binkley said, but the suspect was transported to University Hospital in Louisville for multiple gunshot wounds.
He or she is in critical condition at this time. The suspect’s name has not been released.
No officers or troopers were injured. Police are not looking for any suspects.
Binkley said investigators are working to piece together what led to the chase and what happened that caused police to open fire on the suspect.
Along with EPD and KSP, the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office was also involved in the police chase. At this point, it is not clear which agencies were involved in the shooting -- but KSP said its troopers were not involved.
KSP’s Critical Incident Response Team is investigating.
