MASSAC COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A state of emergency has been issued in Massac County, Illinois due to severe flooding.
According to the Deputy Director with the Massac County Emergency Management, Chris Thompson, they need volunteers this morning to fill sandbags.
Volunteers are urged to go to the Brookport City Hall to sign in. From there, they will go to E. 5th and Pell Road to fill sandbags.
The sandbags are for residential and can be picked up when available.
The City of Brookport will be putting 2 to 3 more floodgates on Sunday, Feb. 24.
The first floodgate at Unionville Road was put up on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Thompson said that the declaration will be a great help for officials to prepare for what’s ahead.
“We want to let everyone know and get ahead of the ballgame and get the resources here in the county to be able to respond to what’s going to happen," said Thompson. "We hope it doesn’t get high but they’re forecasting it so we want to be ready.”
The Massac County’s Emergency Operations Center is open for all who need it.
Officials ask that any flood questions be direct to the center and not the Sheriff’s Office. The center’s number is (618) 524-2002
