DIX, IL (KFVS) - A three-vehicle crash shut down the northbound lanes of I-57 Monday afternoon at mile marker 104 in Jefferson County, Illinois.
Illinois State Police officials said it happened at 5:17 p.m. on Feb. 11.
This is just north of Dix, Ill. according to State Police.
Officials said a Truck Tractor Semi Trailer driven by 39-year-old James A Harlan of Thayer, Missouri was traveling north on the roadway following a Chevrolet Malibu driven by 59-year-old Centralia, Illinois resident Martha J. Beard and Maximo C. Pina Mendez, 43 of Fort Worth, Texas.
Traffic was backed up in that area due to scene clean up from another crash according to police.
State Police said Mendez came to a stop with Beard stopping behind his vehicle. But Harlan did not stop in time and struck Beard’s vehicle causing it to leave the roadway according to police.
Harlan’s vehicle then hit Mendez’s vehicle in the rear causing significant damage to both vehicles.
Mendez and his adult passenger were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
State Police said Harlan was entrapped which required extensive extrication efforts from fire department officials.
Harlan and Beard were taken to out of state hospitals with serious injuries.
The northbound lanes of I-57 were closed for several hours for scene clean up.
State Police said Harlan was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois Department on Transportation provided assistance with traffic control.
