5th graders raise more than $1,000 for humane society

Cape pop-up cafe raises money

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A group of St. Vincent de Paul fifth-grade girls came together to give to the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri through a Glam Cafe on Saturday.

The girls served traditional breakfasts foods and waited tables at the Walden Park Clubhouse.

The girls collected more than $1,000 dollars from the event to donate to the humane society.

The girls grouped together in late 2018 and wanted to do something to help others.

"It's a cafe we started in her basement," Caroline Moon said with her friend beside her. "Then we started doing it in her garage. Then we rented this place (Walden Park Clubhouse) and started doing it here."

The group first started by giving to others through Care Portal in Cape Girardeau, Mo. They raised more than $200 from that event.

"For the Care Portal, we got to shop groceries for people that didn't have that much food," Harper Raffety said. "The people wrote down the food they needed and we went grocery shopping for it. Then, we delivered it to them."

Elle West is another group member. She said they picked the SEMO Humane Society this time to make sure they help out the animals.

"I get to help a good cause, be with my friends and have fun," West said. "We're helping animals and making sure they are taken care of."

"So that they don't have to be hurt or feeling alone. They can find families," Emma Gullette added."

The girl's parents also helped out with the cooking of the food.

The group also is planning another event in the future to help out another organization soon.
