PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - A Calloway County, Kentucky student must have a knack for design.

The 11th grade student, Mark Thang was crowned the winner of the 2019 West Kentucky U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Regional Science Bowl t-shirt design contest. After the win, Thang’s school received a $500 prize.

According to information from the DOE, students at the middle and high school level were challenged by the DOE’s Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office. This is part of the annual science competition coming in February.

The design contest is in it’s second year while the DOE Science Bowl is going 11 years strong according to the DOE.

DOE officials said Thang has been in the country for four months. He is an exchange student from Vietnam.

The University of Kentucky’s College of Engineering Paducah Campus will host the competition in Crounse Hall. High school students will compete on Feb. 1.

Middle school students will compete on Feb. 15.
