MILWAUKEE, WI (CBS) - A Milwaukee bus driver is being hailed a hero for saving the life of a small child found wandering on a freeway overpass.
Irena Ivic said she couldn’t believe her eyes when she spotted a toddler running down the street in Milwaukee, all alone in below-freezing temperatures.
“Oh my God, I was so upset,” she said. “I couldn’t believe that somebody left the child on the street.”
Surveillance video captured the little boy last month, lost and wearing a red onesie and barefoot.
Ivic quickly pulled her bus over on the highway overpass and rushed into oncoming traffic to scoop up the child before he ran into the intersection.
“The baby was so scared and crying,” she said. “He didn’t know what to do or go.”
Ivic said her motherly instinct just kicked in.
“If the same situation again, I would of course again help.”
She cradled the child in her arms and rushed him back to her warm bus. That’s where a passenger took her jacket and wrapped it around the boy.
Ivic had a special message for her passenger.
“If she can hear me, I want to thank her again.”
The baby fell asleep in Ivic’s arms just before police arrived.
Investigators say the child was left outside by his mother who may have been suffering from a mental health crisis. They’ve reunited him with his father.
The city of Milwaukee honored the bus driver whose been on the job for five years for her heroic actions.
Transit officials say this is the ninth time drivers have found a missing or lost child in recent years.
