LOS ANGELES (AP) - The late Heath Ledger wins the Oscar for best supporting actor.
The crowd at the Oscar ceremony gave Ledger a standing ovation as his award was announced.
Ledger played The Joker in "The Dark Knight." Ledger died on Oscar nominations day last year from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.
Ledger's father Kim Ledger thanked the academy on his son's behalf. Kim Ledger says the Oscar shows his son was finally accepted by the industry he loved.
Ledger is only the second performer to win an Oscar posthumously.
Earlier in the evening, Penelope Cruz won the supporting-actress Academy Award for Woody Allen's Spanish romance "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."
