I-57 opens after large crash

By Heartland News & AP

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Il. (KFVS) - Interstate 57 is now completely reopened after a truck carrying hazardous materials crashed Sunday in Franklin County.  The highway was closed for more than seven hours due to a possible chemical spill.

According to police, the accident occurred around 3 p.m.  A truck involved in the accident was carrying a chemical.  Both directions of Interstate 57 were closed between West Frankfort and Benton, Illinois.  Traffic was rerouted at mile marker 71 and mile marker 77.

Investigators say the semi driver apparently fell asleep before crashing. He was taken to a hospital but reportedly wasn't injured.

Officials aren't saying what was on the truck, but it appears the material was in small protected containers.

Hazmat and emergency crews from several communities responded to the accident, and crews are expected to be back on the scene today to make sure no other danger is present.
