CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Laurie Geiger's classroom takes class pets to a whole new level. Two chinchillas, two degus, a cockatiel and a rat were all rescued and are now part of this special class.
Second, third and fourth graders all take part in daily activities with these pets, learning everything from how to clean their cages....to how to properly play with them. For example, the class learned rats really need to be stimulated, so pushing Ruby the rat around in a truck or letting her tight walk a rope are daily occurances.
Geiger goes above and beyond to teach the students the correct way to handle animals.
Her humane actions stick with the kids because she doesn't just teach a lesson on it...this is something they absorb everyday in the classroom.
That is why Ms. Geiger's two legged and four legged friends are making the grade this week!
