Gov. Nixon Asks for Expedited Major Disaster Declaration from President. Obama

Gov. Nixon seeks expedited federal assistance for Missouri in wake of winter storm

Jefferson City - Gov. Jay Nixon today asked President Barack Obama to approve his request for an Expedited Major Disaster Declaration for the state of Missouri as a result of the severe Jan. 26-27 winter storm.
"With almost 100,000 families without power and six fatalities related to the winter storm, my primary concern is the safety of Missourians," Gov. Nixon said. "I have asked President Obama to approve my request as quickly as possible so Missouri can secure needed federal resources to help counties protect their citizens."
More than 13 shelters managed by the Department of Social Services and volunteer organizations have been opened in the wake of the winter storms that began on Monday, Jan 26 and affected primarily southern and southeast Missouri. The Governor said state agencies have delivered dozens of generators to support local sheltering or public utility operations, and that state officials are also accommodating local requests for help augmenting local law enforcement efforts. The Governor's Expedited Major Disaster request focuses on securing the assets needed to conduct life safety actions.
"In order to get federal assistance for our impacted counties, Missouri must meet all of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) requirements for federal disaster assistance," Gov. Nixon said. "We will begin conducting Joint Damage Assessments in the affected counties as soon as possible."
Through an executive order, the Governor has also activated the Missouri National Guard, whose missions include liaison officers in local emergency operations center, emergency route clearance, power generation, and door-to-door visits in Southern and Southeast Missouri. More than 10 other state agencies also are providing services to affected communities, as a result of Gov. Nixon activating the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan on Jan. 26.
Gov. Nixon's request for the expedited federal declaration was provided to President Obama through the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region VII Office in Kansas City.
