GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Oftentimes, displaced people turn to friends and relatives when forced out of their homes. But what if all of your friends and relatives are in the same boat?
That's the situation for many in southeast Missouri, as this week's winter storm has left tens of thousands without power, including some entire communities.
The American Red Cross has set up 11 shelters across the region. By Wednesday night, 915 people were scattered around the various sites.
Southeast Missouri Red Cross director Cheryl Klueppel says preparations are in place to shelter people through the weekend or even longer.
The Salvation Army has also set up a site with 100 cots, hot drinks and food, but with only a few occupants so far.
