It happens to all of us at one time or another - we get involved in cooking or baking, and suddenly we notice we're out of an ingredient. There's no need to panic because we can usually substitute something else we have on hand, and save the day - and here are some common substitutes:

Ingredients Substitutes
1 cup self-rising flour 1 cup all-purpose flour + 1½ teaspoons baking powder + ½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda + ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup granulated sugar + 1 tablespoon molasses
1 ounce semisweet chocolate 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate + 1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup buttermilk 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon white vinegar or 1 tablespoon lemon juice
