10/07/02 - Flu Shot Season

Flu season is right around the corner, but there is some good news. You won't have to wait to get your flu shot this year as in years past. Manufacturers just got the shipments out on time this year. An accomplishment that's making it easier for Heartland health departments to get people vaccinated, before flu season gets here.

This year, Gloria Carlton didn't want to wait to get a flu shot. "Last year we were in the tail end of it. I think we were there the last day they gave them." she says. And last year, a lot of other people were in the same situation, because the flu vaccine shipment was late.

Charlotte Craig with the Cape County Health Department says, "It's been extremely stressful if not impossible the last years to protect people from the flu." But this year, it's a different story. Shipments are coming in right on time, to health departments across the Heartland.

"We're going to be able to offer the protection much earlier," Craig says. "Last year and the year before it was late November and early December before we got it and flu season had already started." Craig also says the good news has come with a price, though. They had to pay more for the vaccine, which means a higher cost for the shots. Now, it's 15 dollars to get a flu shot, a five dollar jump from last year. Even though it's more money, Betty Sprengel says it's a small price to pay. "Just happy to get it so I won't get the flu," Sprengel says.

Even if you get a flu shot, it doesn't mean you won't get the flu, because you can't avoid viruses. But what you can do, is try to protect yourself from getting sick. Be sure and get enough rest, drink plenty of liquids, and eat a proper diet. Following those steps, along with getting a flu shot, should put you on your way to a healthier winter.
