Eleven freight cars of a Union Pacific train derailed Sunday evening between Bonnie, IL and Ina, IL. No one was injured in the mishap. All of the derailed cars are empty and pose no hazard.
The Jefferson County Sheriff says that two of the train cars are blocking Highway 37 which runs next to the railroad tracks. The highway is closed until a railroad crew arrives from St. Louis to clear the cars from Highway 37. Traffic is being detoured to Interstate 57 and local roads.
The derailment happened shortly after 9:00pm Sunday evening. The cause has not been determined.
10:50pm Update: A dispatcher at the Illinois State Police post in DuQuoin tells Heartland News that a train accident has occurred in Jefferson County. The accident happened sometime around 9:00pm Sunday night.
The dispatcher could not give a specific location, but says it is located between Bonnie, IL and Interstate 64.
10:00pm Update: We have received phone calls about a train derailment near Ina, Illinois. Ina, Illinois is located in southern Jefferson County.
