CHICAGO, Ill - U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald calls the breadth of corruption laid out in the charges against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich "staggering."
Fitzgerald issued a statement today in which he describes the charges as alleging that Blagojevich "put a 'for sale' sign on the naming of a United States senator."
The federal charges accuse Blagojevich of trying to benefit from his ability to appoint President-elect Barack Obama's replacement in the U.S. Senate.
FBI spokesman Frank Bochte says federal agents arrested the governor at his home on Chicago's North Side this morning. He was taken to the FBI's headquarters in Chicago.
Bochte says he doesn't know if the governor's family was home at the time of his arrest. He did say that Blagojevich was given time to get dressed before being taken to the headquarters.
