The excimer laser represents a quantum leap in technology. Its cool beam is able to reshape the eye with a precision previously unknown. Even so, it was ten years from its invention in 1985 until the FDA finally granted it approval in 1995.
There will undoubtedly be small improvements in lasers as time goes on.
However, there doesn’t seem to be anything on the horizon which will replace the excimer laser. Anything new would require FDA approval, and thus is several years in the future.
