DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Barack Obama has won Iowa's Democratic caucuses. The first-term senator from Illinois eased past Hillary Clinton and John Edwards in a high-powered field. Obama campaigned as an agent for change.
Mike Huckabee has won the Republican caucuses in Iowa. Over half the people entering the Republican gatherings identified themselves as born-again or evangelical Christians, and said they preferred Huckabee. Mitt Romney outspent him by millions.
After weeks of being solicited in every way imaginable, people in Iowa gathered at more than 1,700 precincts to cast their preferences. Turnout was heavy, threatening to slow the process. One Democratic precinct had 444 participants.
