CARMI, Ill. (AP) - A southeast Illinois man accused of fatally shooting his wife and stepdaughter is to be tried early next year, with prosecutors planning to seek the death penalty.
Thirty-7-year-old Gary Pate has been found mentally fit to stand trial on two counts of first-degree murder in White County.
Authorities say Pate killed 41-year-old Kathleen Pate and her daughter, 19-year-old Amanda Jeffers in their Norris City home's living room.
Police arrested Pate during a traffic stop near Carmi, about 10 miles from Norris City.
A judge has scheduled jury selection to begin February 11th, with testimony expected to get under way the following week.
