Illinois Politicians Line Up Early to Run for Office

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - It was an early morning in two different ways for Illinois politicians.
Hundreds of people lined up at the State Board of Elections this morning so they could file for next year's elections. One legislative candidate said he started waiting yesterday at 5 a.m.
Anyone in line when the office opens gets a shot at being listed first on the ballot.
But it was also early because filing usually begins in December.
Illinois officials moved up the date of the primary election by six weeks -- from mid-March to February Fifth. That meant filing nominating petitions had to be moved up, too.
The move was sold as a way to help the presidential aspirations of Democrat Barack Obama.
Obama supporters were there to file his paperwork this morning -- and so were supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton.
