JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Attorney General Jay Nixon is using his state vehicle for personal and political trips and he's not reimbursing the state for the expense.
Nixon's legal counsel, Ted Ardini, says it's justified because Nixon is always on duty as attorney general -- even when he's campaigning for governor.
Ardini says Nixon uses a police-style car to maintain good communication channels.  And the attorney general's office has assigned investigators to travel with Nixon for security purposes whenever he leaves Jefferson City.
Governor Blunt also travels in a state vehicle at all times.  That's because state law requires the Highway Patrol to provide transportation and security for governors.  It does not make similar requirements for other statewide elected officials.
