Some big grants mean some big changes ahead for some local communities.
Government grants will add to local safety departments.  The grants from the United States Department of Agriculture are designed to enhance the quality of life for rural citizens and communities.
  • Shawnee Community College gets $56,780 for a new nursing simulation lab.
  • The Mississippi County Commission gets $51,568 for new sheriff's department vehicles.
  • The city of Charleston receives $38,070 for a new fire truck. 
  • The Olive Fire Protection District gets $35,00 for a new fire station. 
  • The city of Malden gets $33,000 for a storm warning system. 
  • The village of Ullin gets $30,435 for extraction/rescue gear. 
  • The city of Mounds receives $19,725 for a police car. 
  • The city of East Prairie gets $15,750 for police communications gear and $13,575 for an emergency generator.  
  • The Mississippi County rescue squad receives $10,312 for turn-out gear. 
  • The city of Clarkton gets $6,243 for fire department gear. 
The money is part of more than $9 million in grants to rural communities across the country.
