FURminator De-Shedding Tool: Does it Work?

FURminator De-Shedding Tool: Does it Work?
By: Lauren Keith

It's a fun name with a hefty claim: the FURminator promises to reduce your dog or cat's hair by up to 90 percent.  This professional-grade styling tool looks very much like something you'd shear a sheep with.  In the online video demonstrations, the users pull out massive clumps of their cat and dog's undercoat.  The FURminator promises to be unlike any other de-shedding tool you've ever used.

I took it to Heartland News reporter Holly Brantley's home in Cape Girardeau.  I knew my friend and fellow co-worker loves animals, especially dogs, but after I saw her apartment, I truly knew the depth of her affection.  There were clumps of dog hair on the floor, in the corner, on the couch-you name it!

"We just live with the fur," says an exasperated Holly.

Please keep in mind, I told Holly not to clean up after her beloved dog, Potter, so we could truly see just how much he sheds. Boy, did she heed our commands!

"My broom and vacuum stay out all the time. Cleaning up Potter's hair is a daily chore for me, just like brushing my teeth," she says.

But one look at Potter's cute little face, and I know why Holly keeps Potter around.  Plus, if this new $40 FURminator works this could become less of a hairy situation.

"Guaranteed to reduce shedding--that's a tall order," says Holly as she reads the directions.

The instructions say to give your dog a bath first.  Then you run the FURminator in the direction of the hair growth.  It's not a brush or a rake.  Instead, it has very small teeth that pull out the unwanted fur.

"Oh my gosh! This is getting the very fine hairs that normally don't come off of him! That's why it's cool," says an excited Holly.

Ok, it's clear, this de-shedder works well, but is it worth your 40 bucks?

"I definitely would pay $40 for it!" says Holly.

She says she pays about that just to get Potter groomed, and she thinks the FURminator might cut down on trips to the Doggie Day Spa!

"I''m pretty impressed.  This is definitely a different brush!  We've used everything on the market, and this is by far the best," says Holly.

The breeze outside carried away most of our pile, but we think the FURminator did pull out most of Potter's undercoat, just like the video demonstrations.

"Short of a miracle product, I'd give it an ‘A' or A minus!" says Holly.

I agree---the FURminator trims up an 'A' on this Does it Work test. Also, I asked several other pet owners at Heartland News to take home the FURminator.  Everyone here loves it, and there might be a fight in the newsroom over who gets to take it home after this report airs!  Holly also says she didn't have to clean up after Potter as much in the days after she used the FURminator, which was a huge plus for her.  She says getting out that undercoat cut down Potter's shedding tremendously.  I bought the FURminator at Bucheit.  You find it at Petco and PetsMart as well.  You can also find it online at www.furminator.com.

Also, several of us have passed the FURminator around in the Heartland newsroom.  Jim Burns loved the tool on his cat, Shadow.  He says he almost worried it took out too much hair!  Brian Alworth gives the tool an "A".   He got mounds of undercoat hair from his dog, Pepper.  He says it's a bit high in price, but he likes the FURminator a lot.  Chief Photojournalist John Morgan says his dog loved being brushed with it so much, she laid down almost asking for more!  And there are several others in the newsroom, waiting in line to try it on their pets.

Until the next Does it Work Wednesday, take care!
