MURPHYSBORO, Ill. - A five-year-old boy is dead, and an 18-year-old driver is in trouble after a single-car crash, just southwest of Murhpysboro.
Jackson County sheriff's deputies said the boy was restrained in a car seat, in the back of a 1992 Honda Accord.
A preliminary investigation shows the driver lost control, skidded off Town Creek Road and overturned down a stone embankment.
The boy died at the scene from severe head injuries.
Neither the driver nor a 20-year-old passenger were seriously hurt.
Police arrested the driver, 18-year-old Miguel Castaneda, on charges of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving with a suspended license, no insurance and suspended registration.
He posted bond and was released.
