CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - A load of stone arrived Monday in Cape Girardeau, each one marked with a name.

Names of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who died far from home.

Many of them long ago, but time doesn't diminish what they did and we should not forget.

Some dedicated veterans are making certain we don't.

They came from towns and countryside of Cape Girardeau County, soldiers who went to war and gave their lives.

There are 150 names of those who followed the colors from WWI to the present.  Those names are now remembered forever in granite, a memorial to their courage and patriotism.

Widening Broadway past Freedom Corner created both a necessity and an opportunity to redesign the landmark around Lady Liberty.

"Each individual name that's listed there will have a brick with additional information about their term of service and when they made the ultimate sacrifice," said Cheryl Smith with the American Legion.

A concrete base has been poured by the American Legion to hold the staffs of all the armed forces.

Next, the Marine Corps league will set the memorial stones bearing the names of the 150 who did their duty until death.

The local VFW also participated and contributed in the project.  It's located at Broadway and West End Blvd.
