WASHINGTON -- Former White House aide Lewis Libby has been sentenced to two and a-half years in prison, a victory for prosecutors who had been seeking prison time for Libby in the CIA leak case.

Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff stood calmly in the packed courtroom, where a federal judge said the evidence overwhelmingly proved Libby's guilt.

Libby had been convicted of lying and obstructing the CIA leak investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity.

The judge who handed down the sentence says those in powerful positions "have a special obligation to not do anything that might create a problem."

Libby has maintained his innocence throughout the case, and is appealing his conviction.
