CARBONDALE, Il. -- A late Southern Illinois University professor's generosity is hitting a perfect note for those in the Carbondale campus's music school.
The bulk of Steven Barwick's estate of more than $1-million has been given to the SIU Foundation to benefit the music school, where Barwick had been professor emeritus of piano and music history.
The money will be help establish a scholarship fund for piano students in hopes of drawing more top-notch musicians to the school.
SIU officials had expected Barwick to leave some money to the school, but the amount came as a surprise.
Barwick joined the faculty at SIUC in 1955 and retired in 1988. He died in 2006.
