Second weekend water death in the Heartland
By: Heartland News & Associated Press

BENTON, Ill. -- Authorities in Franklin County say a teenager who drowned over the weekend in Southern Illinois' Rend Lake was from Herrin, Illinois.

Sheriff Bill Wilson says members of the lake's search and rescue team pulled the body of 17-year-old Justin Merritt from water about eight feet deep Sunday night after a three-hour search.

Wilson says the teen had been swimming with a friend at the lake's South Sandusky Beach yesterday when the friend heard the young man yelling for help.  Merritt then disappeared below the surface.

South Sandusky Beach -- on the lake's west side -- is a popular swimming spot.

This is the second water related death over the weekend.  Saturday night a man drowned in the Mississippi River near Caruthersville, Missouri.
