LEDBETTER, Ky. -- Kentucky strawberry farmer Delma Miller was one of the lucky ones. He lost only one-fifth of his crop during a mid-April freeze.
Miller managed to save about 3,000 strawberry plants that produced a good yield.
McCracken County Extension Agent Doug Wilson says most crops suffered badly in the late season freeze. He says 80% of strawberry plants left unprotected were destroyed.
Miller -- whose fields are between the Ohio and Tennessee rivers -- covered his plants with mesh and left it on for the duration.
Wilson says Kentucky's strawberry crops are limited to a small number of commercial farmers these days, unlike the 1940s, when the state was considered the country's strawberry capital.
