FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- Two units from the 101st Airborne Division have received orders to prepare to deploy to Afghanistan early next year.
The announcement came the day after the Department of Defense told three other brigades with the 101st Airborne to prepare to deploy to Iraq. The 101st Division's First, Second and Third Brigades were among ten brigades told to be ready to head to Iraq beginning this fall. In all, the orders involve more than 35,000 soldiers. It would be the third time units from the Fort Campbell post on the Kentucky-Tennessee border have been sent to Iraq.
The latest announcement involves 4,500 soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division Headquarters and the Fourth Brigade Combat Team.
The Pentagon says the rotation will keep two combat brigades in Afghanistan and maintain the forces necessary to improve security and stability.
Since the Iraq war began, 166 members of the 101st Airborne Division have been killed in the conflict. Another 14 special forces soldiers based at Fort Campbell also have died.
