STEELE, Mo. - A junior high school student is hospitalized with several stab wounds after an altercation on a school bus in Southeast Missouri.
Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell says 14-year-old John Moore could have been stabbed as many as 19 times this morning by another 14-year-old boy on the way to school in Steele.
The stabbing happened at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday morning on a South Pemiscot School bus at the intersection of Missouri Route "O" and US Highway 61.
The bus driver pulled into Car-Mac's convience store, where several bystanders managed to pull the suspect off the bus and disarm him.
Moore was flown to the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center in Memphis, Tennessee with multiple stab wounds.  He had surgery Wednesday for stab wounds to the chest, back, legs and arms.  According to the hospital Thursday morning, he is in "good" condition.
Sheriff Greenwell says that the injuries are "very severe".
The suspect is being held by Pemiscot County juvenile authorities while the investigation continues.
Both boys are students at South Pemiscot Middle School in Steele.
