BENTON, Il. -- A Southern Illinois sheriff is hospitalized after his cruiser apparently was hit by a suspect fleeing authorities from another county.
Franklin County Sheriff Bill Wilson says Johnson County Sheriff Elry Faulkner sustained at least one broken leg, head and chest injuries. Wilson says the injuries are serious but not life-threatening.  Faulkner was air lifted to the St. Francis trauma center in Cape Girardeau.
Wilson says the trouble started today when a man stole a car in Benton, had an altercation with a relative in Ewing and got the stolen car stuck.
Wilson says the suspect then stole another vehicle and led authorities on a chase northbound on Interstate 57. He crossed the median and slammed into Faulkner's car.
Faulkner was transporting a prisoner at the time. He had parked on the shoulder of southbound lanes after hearing of the pursuit in the opposite direction.
The suspect and Faulkner's prisoner sustained minor injuries.
